Abstract:
Over many years of research, the concept of a “business model” (BM) has been criticized by many researchers for being ‘murky’ and difficult to study. However, there is a consensus that a company's business model is “the architecture of the mechanism for creating, delivering, and capturing value.” A well-designed BM clearly defines the value proposition and tailors products and services to customer needs, ultimately helping to attract and retain customers. It also defines revenue streams and cost structures, enabling sustainable profit generation. The study used the theory of trade-offs in operating leverage, which involves a strategic choice of production method, to identify BMs. Using panel analysis, it was shown that there is a relationship between the form of ownership and the governance mechanism and BM. It was also shown that the positive advantages of BM are negated by growing agency problems.
