ECTS points

ECTS – the European Credit Transfer System was introduced by a decision of the European Commission to promote a unified procedure for academic recognition of study periods performed abroad by home universities. The system introduces standards for assessment and comparison of study levels in various academic centres and enables to recognize diplomas at the European job market. Implementing ECTS was one of the objectives of the Bologna Declaration (19 June 1999).

ECTS credit points - credits - are assigned to each course or each subject exam at Wroclaw University of Technology. According to the programme of faculty (approved by the faculty council) the semestral performance requirement consists of 27-33 credit points (average 30 per semester). It is necessary to plan the timetable including obligatory subjects (chosen from the blocks of courses) and supplementary general subjects (foreign languages, humanities, sports). The importance of the subject might vary for students of different faculties. You must remember that it is not possible to take only foreign languages and sports, or only 15 hours per semester.

ECTS is based on the principle that credits measure:

  1. The workload of a full-time student during one academic year required to achieve the objectives of a programme specified in terms of the learning outcomes and competences to be acquired(lectures, tutorials, projects, practicals, laboratories and seminar classes)
  2. The importance of courses at the faculty . The workload and efforts to prepare thesis is taken into consideration as well.

IMPORTANT!

When you want to change the faculty, degree or system of studiem, you must remember that the number of ECTS points in your academic record is established by a dean of a new faculty.

At every faculty a student gains the right to registration for the second semester of study if his/her deficit of ECTS points does not exceed the allowable deficit specified by the Council . If a student chooses small content courses and the cumulative value of ECTS points is less than 30, the dean can allow a student to collect missing points in the next semester.

IMPORTANT !

  • The number of points is not a mark. Both a student who got an excellent mark and a student who hardly passed the course get the same number of points (marks will be taken into consideration when the average of marks will be counted )
  • Students are given ECTS points only when they complete the course successfully and fulfill all course requirements (e.g. pass an exam). Students who have not fulfilled all requirements are not given any points.
  • The point value of the course is always an integer.
